Comparison of ditches at Vicksburg and Fort Attaway

At left is a preserved and restored cannon fortification at Vicksburg National Military Park in Mississippi. The arrows point out features typical of such Confederate positions during the War Between the States. At right the arrows point out the remains of similar features at the remains of Fort Attaway in Rome, where the cannon would have been pointed in the opposite direction. The Rome fort has not been preserved, only forgotten, and the features are not as visually noticeable, perhaps because about 140 years of vegetation debris has piled up at the site.
